Some of you may have noticed that the Staggering Stories Forum disappeared off the face of the Internet a few days ago. Our web host, Plus.net, rather carelessly managed to lose all of their customer's CGI web pages after a Hard Disk Drive Array failure. No, they didn't have backups...
I didn't have a backup either (never really imagined a web host could be so negligent - my mistake!) Fortunately the database where all the posts and logins are stored was unaffected. So, this weekend I've been rebuilding the Forum web application from scratch (luckily it was based on the popular PHPBB, so it wasn't quite so bad). Thanks to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine I was able to see some cached pages from the old Forum for reference as to how it used to look and also was able to retrieve the Cascading Style Sheet as it used to be.
The upshot of all this is that you shouldn't really be able to tell anything has happened. All the old posts and logins are as they were. The Forum should look and act as it did before. I've now got a backup, too! You may, however, notice bugs introduced by this rebuild - if you do please let me know in this thread (if you can!)
Hopefully service is now resumed. Learn from my mistake - always take backups and trust no one!!
