Yup... the 'Bad Lieutenant' to play the grouchy DCI. Poor old Colm Meany... bet he really though he'd landed on his feet there and wouldn't forever be known as that irish fella off of Star Trek :(

Hmm, just in time for the release of the podcast where we say that there is no news on the recasting of US Gene Hunt! Typical! Oh, well, it was true when we recorded (unlike most of what we say!)

Obviously a big name, a 'movie star' name. Odd how so many film actors are now returning to the small screen. As for Keitel himself, looking at IMDB, I've seen him in such films as Reservoir Dogs, From Dusk Till Dawn and National Treasure. Can't say I really remember him, though. Generic Hollywood tough guy to me, I'm afraid. Probably a good piece of casting, in that case. A tougher more New York sort of guy who can probably stand up to this new Jason O'Mara Tyler. Time will tell.

As for the Meaney - yep, bad luck indeed. I was never convinced it was the right role for him, though. I could have been wrong but I just couldn't picture him with the attitude required for Gene Hunt. He's done tough men a lot himself but not the right kind of tough man, I think. Hopefully there is a better role out there for him somewhere (and one that might last longer than an almost certainly doomed US remake of a UK drama - perhaps this Keitel casting might change that series fate, though).

Now they're recast Annie too... http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/a11737 ... annie.html

Gretchen Mol eh? She was very good in 'Rounders' an excellent late 90s poker drama. Not sure about much else though... though her imdb implies she's been busy... http://www.uk.imdb.com/name/nm0001543/

Hmm, interesting. Sounds like about the only survivor from the original pilot is the Sam Tyler actor. This sounds so much like the two Red Dwarf US pilots...

It's good news worthy stuff for the next 'cast! It's also good to just generally speculate as to how much of a disaster this Life on Mars is going to be... They didn't need to do this sort of retooling for the original...
