No WINDOWS XP!!!!! - NO E MAIL

Post by macfadyan »

My pc just chose tonight to stop booting windows xp. Ive been getting the occasional blue screen of death on booting xp for a while and now it doesnt want to work at all.

I'm online in windows 98 - however, my e mail prog, Thunderbird, simply doesnt want to work. Ive been having a lot of trouble with it in xp.....so, Adam, old buddy, old pal, expect a phone call shortly, sorry mate.

Im praying I wont need a complete reformat of my d drive - its not backed up and theres sooooooo much that needs backing up...grrr...

I keep promising myself I will refuse to support Windows on any machine - perhaps that should be my new years resolution!

Hard to diagnose or suggest anything without seeing the machine, so I'll have to take a look at it. The eternal questions of 'what firewall', 'what anti-virus' and 'do you do your Windows Updates' all come to mind, though. Windows really is a nightmare to maintain and out on the Internet everything is out to get it. Of course it may just be normal Windows instability in this case rather than anything malicious...

Would help if you could tell us what was on the Blue Screen Of Death. It ought to tell you the failing DLL or VXD somewhere at the top. Just a hunch though, you haven't updated your system with any of the new 64 bit drivers by accident?
