Nice, but why would any Cyberman want a window in his head?

Ep 5

Post by Adam J Purcell »

It's the optional sunroof. The ABS, metallic paint and gold resistance are probably standard features on this new model!

I know nothing much about this new story, so here are my predictions. We already know from the trailer that this is an alternative earth. That means we may very well have duplicates of regular characters - will the writer be able to resist the obvious Sci Fi cliché of killing off a regular character without really killing them? I therefore predict that an alternative Tyler (not Sam) or Smith will be converted into a cyberman! It's an obvious prediction but I wanted to get in there before anyone else here!

I hope we don't get the 'evil twin' scenario - with the doubts at the end of the episode if they've taken the good Mickey twin or the bad (original) one!

You mean they've been given a Cybertrinny and Cybersusannah makeover? Incidentally, I predict all your predictions will come true.

The real question is whether the alternate Mickey will be called Rickey - thus making some sense of Doc 9's lame attempts to wind him up?

Wow! I can honestly say I've loved every episode so far this season. If anything, they're getting better as we go along. Didn't think much of the President. Standing in front of a steel man and saying the equivilent of "Yeah? Wotcha gonna do about it, mate?" is always going to get you killed.

So how are they going to get out of this one? If the Doc uses his sonic screwdriver I will be very annoyed.

It's the old story: "Doctor" says companion, "You were chained up, wrapped in a blanket, dumped in a steel box, encased in concrete, dropped in the sea and sank 45 miles below the surface, the sun exploded and turned the whole planet into solid rock. How did you escape?" "Easy," says the Doctor, "I used my sonic screwdriver."

Please, no.

Perhaps the Git Wizard could do with a sonic screwdriver!

As for the episode... It was okay. Perhaps it's a little early to say, so I'll reserve my final judgement until next week.

My preliminary thoughts, though, are: a little underwhelming. Didn't see much of the Cybermen but of what we did see they appeared rather, er, mechanical! Mindless automatons. That's a shame after they make such a point that they are actually humans, not robots. Perhaps that will be addressed when we see more of them in episode 2.

Talking of automatons - did anyone else think that Roger Lloyd Pack's acting was rather sub-par? I don't know what's coming up but I think it a safe bet that Trigger will become the first Cybercontroller. If I'm right with that guess then let's hope it happens early in the next episode! I wonder if whoever does become the controller will have more of their individuality left? If not Trigger then it will have to be a Smith or Tyler.

I was glad to see that they didn't leave the TARDIS 'dead' until the end of the story. We all know the TARDIS will be okay so it's good we don't have to go through the phoney 'stuck here forever' storyline.

For me, last year all three of the two parters had a stronger first part than second. If that's true of this one then I think this story is sunk. I suspect this won't be the case, though. I certainly hope not. I don't really remember Revenge of the Cybermen (I would have been 1 year old) and certainly wasn't around for any cyber story before that. My Cybermen are the Earthshock ones, the David Banks era. They were never minions, used perhaps but always their own creatures. We'll have to see where this goes next episode and in any subsequent stories they might appear in. Until then, the lion sleeps tonight!

I can't believe I was right - though I think it's just a nod to the fans and not going anywhere.

Anyway, I loved Rise... very old school Who. Lumic's a deranged meglomaniac on medication and in severe pain - he's meant to sound and look like that! It's not fair to judge the story on this first part alone... but I think it'll be a good 'un.,,, well, maybe not for Mickey!
