My, what a bunch of grown up Doctor Who fans we are. A new series starts and nobody has anything to say about it. Just wondering what other people think, I tried looking in nntp://rec.arts.drwho but it's full of nerds who pick every nuance apart and it never seems to occur to them that Who is not Shakespeare.
Anyway ....
I thought it a decent season opener. Not the most challenging, nor original of plots, but nevertheless a decent 45 minutes of action with a social message thrown in for good measure. Perhaps the two plot threads (The Lady Cassandra and the New Earth answer to the NHS) didn't mesh very well but in terms of story it's a vast improvement to her introduction and I liked the Doctor's compassionate treatment of her in the finale even if Cassandra's conversion to 'good girl' came too quickly and for no really sane reason. The main plot thread suffered from having too similar an ending to The Doctor Dances and while that's not neccessarily a bad idea, it lost out in comparison to the emotional intensity of Eccleston's story. Overall it had humour, style and a decent storyline and some good characterisation from Tennant's version of the Doctor that's perfectly in keeping with the hero we grew up with. 6/10 and a good start but a few more two-parters would be very welcome, it's tough to do anything really inventive in anything less than an hour.
BTW, I've changed my sig line. One that's more in keeping with the Who ethic.
